Praluent and Repatha fall under a newer class of drugs called PCSK9 inhibitors that also lower LDL cholesterol. These injectable medications are given once to twice monthly and work by blocking an enzyme in the liver called PCSK9. PCSK9 is a protein that stops LDL cholesterol from being broken down.

There are other medicines that can also lower cholesterol. These may be used along with statins if statins do not lower your cholesterol enough. Non-statin drugs that can lower cholesterol include: Ezetimibe; PCSK9-inhibitors; Bile acid sequestrants; High cholesterol increases your risk of heart and blood vessel disease and medicines can lower that risk.

When combined with statins, they can lower LDL cholesterol even more. Fibrates. Fibrate medications include gemfibrozil (Lopid), fenofibrate (TriCor) and clofibrate (Atromid-S). Cholesterol absorption inhibitors. The only approved drug in this class is ezetimibe (Zetia).
