The short answer to how long drug patents last is “twenty years.” It’s usually more complex than that, however. Utility patents will last the full 20 years from the date of filing unless the patent is somehow found to be invalid or the inventor does not pay maintenance fees 3.5, 7.5, and 11.5 years after the original patent is granted.
