There are other causes of drug shortages, such as issues with wholesalers or distributors, delays in transportation, poor ordering practices at healthcare facilities, or if too many facilities are using the same distributor in one region. A break in one area of the supply chain will lead to a drug shortage, whether short or long term.

The University of Utah also reports reasons for shortages. Unknown reasons are reported for 47 percent of drug shortages; manufacturing problems for 28%; supply/demand for 14 percent; discontinuations for 7 percent; raw materials for 3 percent; and regulatory issues for 1 percent.
