Examples of diluents include normal saline (NS), sterile water for inject (SWFI), Dextrose 5% in water (D5W), or lidocaine 1% plain. Once you have determined the proper diluent and volume required, draw up the diluent in a syringe and add it to the dry medication.

Reconstitution of Powdered Drugs What is Reconstitution? Some drugs must be stored in powdered form because they rapidly lose their power once they are mixed into a solution. These drugs will then have to be reconstituted, or mixed with a liquid, called the diluent, before they can be administered.

It is also used to convert a dry form of a substance to a liquid form. For example, water is used to liquefy a dry form of baby formula. When reconstituting medications, read the directions to find out which diluent needs to be used. Water or normal saline (NS) solution is often used to dilute medicines and to liquefy dry, powdered forms of medicines.

Reconstitution is essentially the process through which you take a dry powdered drug and completely dissolve it using a diluent. You add a specified volume of diluent based on the formulation parameters to the dry powder, to give you your reconstituted preparation which has a specific concentration.
