The euthanasia medication most vets use is pentobarbital, a seizure medication. In large doses, it quickly renders the pet unconscious. It shuts down their heart and brain functions usually within one or two minutes. It is usually given by an IV injection in one of their legs.

Canine euthanasia completed in a two-step process includes administration of a sedative or anesthetic followed by an injection of a barbiturate, according to PetMD. The medication used varies. Veterinarians may use Telazol, ketamine, propofol, medetomidine, Acepromazine or xylazine as the first injection.

Human medicine such as Benadryl or Tylenol PM is often used for euthanasia. CBD oil can help relax and calm your cat or dog when considering to euthanize your own dog at home. You're also able to use Benadryl or Tylenol PM while administering CBD oil. Some are against dog euthanasia at home because it seems like a terrible thing to do.

Acepromazine: Ace, as it’s known, is a tranquilizer commonly used in vet practice to chill out aggressive dogs through IM injection. Though I much prefer to use small doses of Domitor mixed with opiates, Ace is popular for its inexpensiveness and low abuse potential.

Euthanizing dogs with Benadryl. Benadryl is a drug that is commonly used for treating allergies, anxiety, and a few other things as well. But in the recent past, we have seen that people use it for euthanizing purposes as well. Yes, this drug can be used to euthanize the dogs, but the aftereffects are quite devastating.

Medetomidine: Marketed as Domitor by Pfizer, this drug is excellent to induce a pain-relieving sedation with a sting-less IM injection for dogs. Mixed with opiates and other drugs, it also works well for painless IM injection in cats. It’s price, however, leaves something to be desired.

That gives you time to make a short phone call, answer an email or quickly scoot in to see a patient. I give my feline patients drug cocktails with whopping doses of acepromazine. My canine patients get both acepromazine and xylazine. I give myself two legs to get a vein for euthanasia. If I don’t, they get it IP or IC.

Both secobarbital capsules and pentobarbital liquid (generally known as the brand name, Nembutal) – (not to be confused with phenobarbital for epilepsy) have been used alone or in combination for physician-assisted suicide or Euthanasia. They are also used in injectable forms for animal euthanasia.
