Livalo is a brand (trade) name for pitavastatin (also called pitavastatin calcium) which may be used for the treatment of high cholesterol. Pitavastatin works by blocking an enzyme, called HMG-CoA reductase, in the liver that catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a rate-limiting step in the synthesis of cholesterol.
