That is why patients are routinely counseled to take statins at night; a time when cholesterol production is at its highest and when dietary intake of cholesterol is at its lowest. Short-acting statins (which have half-lives around 6 hours) are therefore more effective when taken in the evening.

It is highly recommended that cholesterol medications in the statin class, such as simvastatin, be taken at bedtime. Other medications in this class include lovastatin, generic Lipitor (atorvastatin), as well as Crestor. If you are like me, you appreciate to know why recommendations are made.

The medicine comes in tablet or capsule form. Do not open capsules, or break or chew tablets, before taking the medicine. Most people who take statins do so once a day. Some should be taken at night, but others can be taken anytime.

Take once daily. May be taken at any time of the day (morning or night); however, it is best to be consistent with the time you take your tablets. The dosage of atorvastatin needs to be individualized but initially should start at 10-20 mg/day and be guided by the results of cholesterol tests taken 2 to 4 weeks later.

Ideally, the drug is prescribed so that the peak concentration coincides with the time of day when your blood pressure is at its highest.
